In-Country Mission Reports
Providing on-the-ground technical assistance, guidance and support is an important component of the CCA HIV/AIDS Initiative work. As part of its work with the World Bank MAP, the Initiative has worked closely with CCA members, business coalitions against HIV/AIDS and other private sector representatives in-country to assist them in building capacity, financing initiatives, developing and implementing programs, and monitoring and evaluating outcomes.
- Mali (en français) February 2007 The objective of this second private sector HIV/AIDS mission to Mali was to continue a dialogue with the HCNLS (Haut Comité National de Lutte contre le SIDA) and the CSP VIH/SIDA (Coalition du Secteur privé dans la lutte contre le SIDA) on strengthening the engagement of the Malian private sector in the fight against HIV/AIDS in support of Mali’s national HIV/AIDS strategy. The discussions included an evaluation of the private sector component of the MAP in Mali; the development of strategies to build the capacity of the business coalition; potential approaches to facilitate the inclusion of small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) and the informal sector in the national HIV/AIDS strategy; and ideas for leveraging additional financial and technical resources.
- Mauritania (en français) March 2007 The objective of this second private sector HIV/AIDS mission to Mauritania was to continue a dialogue with the National AIDS Commission (Le Secrétariat Exécutif National de Lutte contre le SIDA (SENLS)) and the Business Coalition (La Coalition des Entreprises Mauritaniennes Contre le VIH/SIDA (CEMA-VIH/SIDA)), on how to strengthen the Mauritanian private sector’s response to HIV/AIDS in tandem with the country’s national HIV/AIDS strategy. The discussions included an evaluation of the private sector component of the MAP and a review of the business coalition’s long-term strategy to engage the private sector.
- The Democratic Republic of Congo (English) (en français) April 2007 The objective of this private sector HIV/AIDS mission was to continue the dialogue with the PMNLS (Programme National Multisectoriel de Lutte contre le SIDA) and private sector stakeholders on how to expand partnerships in support of the DRC National Agenda against HIV/AIDS. The discussion included development of national policies and workplace guidelines; the expansion of management capacity and service delivery within the business coalition (CIELS) to mobilize the private sector response; the implementation of other strategies to reach priority sectors (mining, transport, forestry); creation of linkages to and leveraging of other technical and financial resources (multi-lateral and bilateral); and exploration of the role of civil society in enhancing public-private partnerships and access to services for HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment.
- Morocco: Private Sector Mobilization Sub-regional Forum for Francophone Africa (English) June 2006 The HIV/AIDS Private Sector Mobilization Forum for Francophone Africa is part of a larger effort to develop innovative partnerships between the public and private sectors and civil society in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Building on the success of private sector partnerships in Anglophone Africa , this Forum provided access and opportunities to exchange information and discussed tools to support and implement action plans and workplace programs that fully engage the power and resources of the private sector in national HIV/AIDS agendas.
- Mali (en français) May 2006 The objective of this initial private sector HIV/AIDS mission was to begin a dialogue with the HCNLS (Haut Comité National de Lutte contre le SIDA) and the CSP (Coalition du Secteur privé) on how to further engage the Malian private sector in the fight against HIV/AIDS in support of Mali’s national strategy for the fight against HIV/AIDS. The discussions included an evaluation of the private sector component of the MAP in Mali; strategies to promote the business coalition in order to enhance the participation of local businesses, especially SMEs and the informal sector; and strategies to better engage the private sector and leverage additional resources.
- Senegal (English) (en français) March 2006 The objective of this private sector HIV/AIDS mission was to begin a dialogue with the CNLS (Comite National de Lutte contre le SIDA) and private sector stakeholders, including other donors and NGOs, on how to develop the role of the private sector in support of the Senegal national agenda against HIV/AIDS. The discussion included an evaluation of the private sector component of the MAP housed within the CNLS; an assessment of private sector involvement in the national HIV/AIDS strategy; the development of basic mechanisms for private sector engagement through the CNLS, including a private sector manual, criteria, and M&E tools; the role of the private sector in the national strategy against HIV/AIDS; the role of the CNLS in coordinating the national strategy.
- The Democratic Republic of Congo (English) February 2006 The objective of this private sector HIV/AIDS mission was to continue the dialogue with the PMNLS (Programme National Multisectoriel de Lutte contre le SIDA) and private sector stakeholders, including other donors and NGOs, on how to expand partnerships in support of the DRC National Agenda against HIV/AIDS. The discussion included development of national policies and workplace guidelines; the role the business coalition (CIELS) within PNMLS as the primary catalyst for private initiatives; other strategies to engage the private sector; linkage to and leverage of other resources (multi-lateral and bilateral); and exploration of the role of civil society in enhancing public-private partnerships for HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment. The mission also initiated discussions concerning the expanded distribution of ARVs and procurement of condoms with appropriate private sector partners.
- Mauritania (English) (en français) January 2006 The objective of this initial private sector HIV/AIDS mission was to pursue a dialogue with the SENLS (Secrétariat Exécutif National de Lutte contre le SIDA) and private sector partners on the development of the private sector component of the National Strategy against HIV/AIDS. The discussions included how the HIV/AIDS crisis is affecting business, the possible strategies to engage and provide additional resources to the private sector, and how they, individually or through professional associations, could become more actively engaged in the national response to HIV/AIDS.
- Democratic Republic of Congo (English) Oct 2004 The objective of this mission was to pursue a dialogue with the DRC National AIDS Commission, the PMNLS (Progame National Multisectoriel de Lutte contre le SIDA), and private sector partners on how to build a partnership to support the DRC National Agenda against HIV/AIDS.
- Malawi: Private Sector Mobilization Sub-regional Forum (English) June 2004 The goal of the Malawi Private Sector Mobilization Forum was to bring together private sector representatives to exchange information and share experiences on issues relating to private sector mobilization in the area of HIV/AIDS. The Forum was held June11-16, 2004 in Blantyre, Malawi and representatives from 12 Sub-Saharan Africa countries attended.
